Programs & Initiatives
From merit-based scholarships to hands-on career mentorship and school facility grants, our programs are designed to create measurable, lasting educational impact across the Westside Unified School District and the broader Denver metropolitan community.
Academic Funding Programs
Our scholarship portfolio serves high school seniors, current undergraduates, graduate students, and returning adult learners through both merit-based and need-based awards evaluated by a volunteer review committee of alumni professionals.
Merit Scholarship Program
Awards up to $8,000The Westside Founders Merit Scholarship is the foundation's flagship academic recognition, awarded annually to graduating seniors who demonstrate exceptional scholastic achievement, sustained leadership in extracurricular activities, and a demonstrable commitment to community service. Applicants must carry a minimum 3.5 cumulative unweighted GPA, submit two letters of recommendation from school faculty or community leaders, and complete a 1,000-word personal statement describing how their Westside education shaped their academic and professional aspirations. The scholarship review committee, composed of twelve volunteer alumni professionals across education, law, healthcare, and business, evaluates every application through a standardized rubric covering academic rigor, leadership initiative, community impact, and financial stewardship potential. Awards range from $3,000 to $8,000 depending on committee scoring and available endowment funds for the current cycle. Recipients may renew the award for up to four consecutive years, provided they maintain a 3.2 GPA at their enrolled institution and complete 20 hours of annual community service. Since 1998, the Merit Scholarship Program has awarded over $1.4 million to 280 individual recipients.

Awards up to $5,000Recognizing that financial hardship remains one of the most significant obstacles to post-secondary enrollment, our need-based aid programs serve students whose Expected Family Contribution falls below $15,000 as determined by the Free Application for Federal Student Aid. The First-Generation College Pioneer Grant specifically targets students whose parents or guardians did not complete a bachelor's degree, providing up to $4,000 in direct tuition assistance combined with dedicated advising from our college transition counselor. The Healthcare Heroes Nursing Grant supports aspiring nurses pursuing BSN, ADN, or allied health certifications at accredited Colorado institutions, disbursing up to $5,500 to cover tuition, clinical lab fees, and required licensure examination costs. The Returning Scholars Opportunity Fund offers flexible support of up to $3,500 for adult learners aged 25 and older who are re-entering education after a career interruption, covering tuition, childcare stipends, and professional certification testing fees. All need-based applicants receive a personalized financial planning consultation with our scholarship office staff at no cost, ensuring families understand the full landscape of federal, state, and private aid available to them.

Awards up to $6,000Colorado's technology and engineering sector is one of the fastest-growing in the nation, yet students from under-resourced school districts remain significantly underrepresented in STEM degree programs. The STEM Innovation Scholarship provides up to $6,000 annually to students pursuing bachelor's or associate's degrees in science, technology, engineering, or mathematics at accredited institutions. Beyond financial support, recipients gain membership in our STEM Scholars Cohort, a structured enrichment community featuring monthly virtual seminars with alumni engineers and data scientists, priority access to paid summer internship placements at Denver-area technology firms, and invitations to our annual Innovation Symposium where students present capstone research to industry judges. Applicants must demonstrate a minimum 3.2 GPA in STEM coursework and submit a brief research interest statement. Additionally, the foundation partners with three local corporations to provide matched scholarship funding, effectively doubling the per-student investment for cohort members who maintain enrollment through their junior year.

Future Educators Teaching Fellowship
Annual Stipend up to $4,500The teaching profession faces a critical workforce shortage, particularly in high-need Colorado school districts serving low-income communities. Our Future Educators Fellowship provides an annual stipend of up to $4,500 to aspiring K–12 teachers who commit to completing their certification program and returning to serve in a Colorado Title I school for a minimum of three years post-graduation. Fellows receive structured classroom observation placements at Westside district partner schools beginning in their sophomore year, monthly pedagogical workshops led by veteran alumni educators with 10 or more years of classroom experience, and priority consideration for student teaching assignments within the district. Since the fellowship's launch in 2012, 94 fellows have completed the program, and 82% remain active in Colorado classrooms today, teaching subjects ranging from elementary literacy and special education to secondary mathematics and science.
Fellowship Details →Career Mentorship Network
12-Month Structured ProgramThe Career Mentorship Network is a twelve-month structured program pairing current students and recent graduates with established alumni professionals working across engineering, healthcare, education, law, finance, creative industries, and skilled trades. Each mentoring relationship is formalized through a signed commitment agreement outlining monthly meeting expectations, professional development milestones, and confidentiality standards. Mentees receive access to our proprietary alumni career portal, which aggregates internship postings, resume and cover letter review services, salary benchmarking data, and a mock interview scheduling tool staffed by alumni hiring managers. Over 1,400 mentorship pairs have completed the program since 2004, and post-program surveys consistently report that 89% of mentees credit their Westside mentor with directly influencing their first professional hire or graduate school admission. The program accepts applications in September of each year, and mentors undergo a background check and orientation training before being matched.
Join the Mentorship Network →Alumni Networking Events
Year-Round ProgrammingMaintaining a vibrant, connected alumni community is central to the foundation's long-term mission. Throughout the year, we host a calendar of networking events designed to foster professional connections, celebrate alumni achievements, and strengthen the bonds between graduating classes spanning multiple decades. Our flagship Annual Alumni Gala, held each October at the Denver Center for the Performing Arts, brings together over 500 alumni and community supporters for an evening of recognition, fundraising, and fellowship. The quarterly Industry Mixer Series hosts smaller, sector-focused gatherings in healthcare, technology, education, and creative industries at venues across the Denver metro area. Each summer, the Westside Homecoming Picnic welcomes alumni families back to campus for a day of food, games, campus tours, and the unveiling of the annual Distinguished Alumni Award. These events collectively raise over $180,000 annually in direct and pledged contributions that fund our scholarship and community investment programs.
